Purposes, legal basis of processing and data retention
The GDPR requires data controllers to provide data subjects with information regarding the purposes of the processing for which personal data are intended, as well as the legal basis of the processing. In this regard, EWTN provides the following information and informs users that personal data will not be used for purposes other than those covered by the respective legal basis on which such data are processed:
Dati di Navigazione
Purpose
‘Personal data is automatically acquired by means of technical and necessary cookies installed to enable web browsing. They are used to perform aggregate statistical analyses aimed at measuring the proper functioning of the website. In the event of cybercrime against the Site, the data may be used to ascertain possible liability. We may use software to verify a website user’s address (‘Identity Verification’) in order to prevent session hijacking, hacking attempts or other attacks.
Where applicable, please note that in order to grant access to the Website, EWTN may send a welcome email to all new registered users of the Website to verify their password and username.
In addition, it may be necessary to send an announcement strictly related to the service. For example, if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance, we may send an email to registered users. Generally, registered users cannot opt out of such communications, although they can deactivate their account.
In order for this Site to meet users’ expectations, it may be necessary to supplement the information received with information from third-party sources.’
Legal basis
The legal basis legitimising the processing of this data is the legitimate interest of the Data Controller (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR) to ensure the proper functioning of the Site and the available services, as well as to proceed with the investigation of possible criminal offences.
Data Retention
‘Data is generally retained for short periods, as set out in the following section of this Policy relating to cookies.
In addition to cookies necessary for browsing, we may install other types of cookies that will allow us to capture additional data about your browsing experience. In this case, however, your consent, expressed via the appropriate cookie panel, will be required. For more details, please read the Cookie Policy below.’

Purpose
Personal data relating to requests for information, services and more general enquiries (e.g. concerning initiatives and events, features of services, etc.) are used to handle users’ requests and contact them regarding the events, information or services requested.
Legal basis
The processing of data, which takes place on the basis of user requests, is therefore necessary to perform the contract between EWTN and the user or to take necessary pre-contractual measures.
Data retention
Collected data is generally kept for short periods and, in any case, for as long as is strictly necessary to process requests and provide the requested service/information.
Donation data
Purpose
Personal data is collected and used for billing purposes, to process donations, or to contact the donor in case of problems in processing the donation. Credit card information is no longer used after the transaction is completed, unless the donor has consented to recurring donations.
Legal Basis
‘The legal bases legitimising the processing of this data are:
the execution of a contract to which the user is a party or for the adoption of pre-contractual measures at the user’s request (Article 6(1)(b) of the GDPR), and, in this case, the management of the donation in all its phases and activities instrumental to it (such as, for example, reporting, communications on the donation and regularity in its activation or changes communicated by the donor)
compliance with legal obligations to which the Data Controller is subject, such as administrative and other mandatory obligations under applicable European Union and national laws (Article 6(1)(c) of the GDPR).
Where the processing concerns sensitive personal information, the processing is carried out in the course of EWTN’s lawful activities, with appropriate safeguards (Article 9(2)(d) of the GDPR).’
Data retention
Data is generally retained for the purpose of recording donations and responding appropriately to donor requests. Data will be deleted at the request of the donor.
Newsletter data
Purpose
‘Personal data is used to provide users with news about the Vatican and information from EWTN about their work and how best to support them, and to conduct market research. Our newsletters and marketing communications include updates on our latest projects, successes and donation opportunities. We will only send electronic newsletters or other marketing communications to those who have specifically requested them or who have given permission for such contact through their preferred channels.
From time to time, our Site may request information from users via surveys. Participation in these surveys is completely voluntary, and you therefore have a choice whether or not to disclose the requested information. Survey information will generally be used to monitor or improve the use and satisfaction of this Site. Participation in the survey will count as consent to processing.
Subscribers may unsubscribe from these communications at any time. Please see the Choice/Opt-out Section.’
Legal basis
‘The legal basis legitimising the processing of this data is the user’s consent (Article 6(1)(a) of the GDPR).
Users may revoke their consent at any time by clicking on the unsubscribe link in any communication received or, alternatively, by contacting the Data Controller at vatican@ewtn.com.’
Data retention
Identification and contact data will be used to reach users with our communications for twenty-four (24) months after the user has provided consent, unless consent is revoked earlier.
Job application data
Purpose
‘Personal data is used to respond to general enquiries from users regarding job opportunities and to communicate with candidates during the recruitment process and assess their qualifications, skills and suitability for the position applied for.
Please note that the Data Controller may also acquire sensitive personal information relating to the health status of candidates (e.g. in the case of the selection of a resource belonging to protected categories) or revealing racial or ethnic origin. As this data is highly confidential, we kindly ask users to provide only the information strictly necessary for the purposes of the application.’
Legal basis
The processing of this data is necessary in order to take measures at the request of the data subject prior to the conclusion of a contract. The Controller is also authorised to process the sensitive personal information of candidates provided voluntarily, without seeking their consent. For further information, please refer to the Controller’s data protection policy for candidates.
Data retention
Personal data is retained for eighteen (18) months after its provision.

COOKIE POLICY
This section of the Policy provides information about the cookies used by this Website.
Cookie Policy
This Cookie Policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies to recognise you when you visit our Websites. It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to control their use.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by website owners to make their sites work, or function more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the website owner (in this case, EWTN) are called ‘first-party cookies’. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called ‘third-party cookies’. Third party cookies allow third party features or services to be provided on or through the website (e.g. advertising, interactive content and analytics). The parties that set these third party cookies may recognise your computer both when you visit the website in question and when you visit certain other websites.
Why do we use cookies?
We use first and third party cookies for different reasons. Some cookies are necessary for technical reasons to enable our Website to function, and we call these ‘essential’ or ‘strictly necessary’ cookies. Other cookies allow us to track and target the interests of our users to improve the experience on our Website. Third parties provide cookies through our Site for advertising, analytical and other purposes. This is described in more detail below.
How can I control cookies?
You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies. You can exercise your cookie rights by setting your preferences in the Cookie Consent Manager. The Cookie Consent Manager allows you to select which categories of cookies to accept or reject. Essential cookies cannot be rejected as they are strictly necessary to provide you with services.
The Cookie Consent Manager can be found in the notification banner and on our website. If you choose to decline cookies, you will still be able to use our website, although access to some features and areas of our site may be limited. You can also set or modify your browser controls to accept or decline cookies. As the means by which you can reject cookies via browser controls varies from browser to browser, you should consult your browser’s help menu for more information.
What are other tracking technologies, such as web beacons?
Cookies are not the only way to recognise or track visitors to a website. We may use other similar technologies from time to time, such as web beacons (sometimes called ‘tracking pixels’ or ‘clear gifs’). These are small graphic files that contain a unique identifier that allows us to recognise when someone has visited our Websites or opened an email that includes them. This allows us, for example, to monitor user traffic patterns from one page of our Web Sites to another, to deliver or communicate via cookies, to understand whether you arrived on our Web Sites from an online advertisement displayed on a third party site, to improve site performance, and to measure the success of email marketing campaigns. In many cases, these technologies rely on cookies to function properly, so refusing cookies will affect their operation.
Do we use cookies for marketing and analytics?
Yes, we may use cookies and other tracking technologies to collect and analyse information about your browsing habits and interaction with our website, to tailor our services to your interests and to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns.
Cookies used and for what purposes

Social Buttons
Widgets depicting social network icons (‘social buttons’) are present on the site. These ‘buttons’ allow users browsing the site to interact directly with the social networks depicted by clicking on them. In this case, the social network acquires data relating to the visit. In order to ensure that the data processed on this site is not linked to your social profile, it is recommended that you log off from it. Third-party platforms that can be accessed are not covered by this policy. For further information on the processing of personal data, the user is invited to consult the relevant privacy policy.
